10 Tokyo photos on 10/10/10

Hello Sandwiches.

I took off on my mamachari (again) and rode around Koenji, Nakano and Shimokitazawa to take these ten Tokyo photos as part of Victoria Hannan's exciting 1010 project.


Victoria explains the project:

10 photographers. 10 photos each. All taken on 10/10/10.
A single day represented in 100 photographs.
No special occasion, no big event, just the essence of daily life captured through ten lenses.
The 1010 project was devised as an antidote to everything in modern life always having to be bigger, better, louder and brighter than what’s been before.
It’s an opportunity to slow down and appreciate the simple, everyday things that make life beautiful.

サンドJ-WAVE Radio Interview!

Sandwiches! I am still pinching myself a little in disbelief but somehow I was lucky enough to be interviewed today for the Rendez-vous show on Japanese radio station J-WAVE! It was soooo much fun and J-WAVE's Roppongi offices have the most lovely view!

Tokyo Zine Picnic

The Zine Picnic in Yoyogi Koen has been moved to Monday because of this Tokyo rain!

We Craft This City

Hello Sandwich Craft Wall




























Hello Sandwiches.

What a lovely creative and crafty place Sydney has been these past few weeks! Here are a few pictures from the exhibitions and workshops I've been involved in lately. It's been so much fun!

One of the exhibitions, We Craft This City at Sydney's Object Gallery opened today and continues until 10th October so if you are in the area please pop in. They have free crafternoon and crafting powerhour workshops running throughout the week. You can even make one of these amazing vessels from plastic bags.

Thank you so much everyone for coming along to my papercraft workshop today. It was so lovely to create with you! And going to the Sydney screening of 'Making it Handmade' this evening was such a lovely way to end a creative crafty day! Pip you are amazing and I loved you in the documentary.

I also popped into The Papermill while I've been in Sydney where you can now buy my Tokyo Guide Zine and a whole bunch of other super cute zines. And isn't the new Gaffa Gallery location just amazing! Oooo if you are planning a trip to Sydney these are two places not to miss! Well Sandwiches, I'm off back to Tokyo next week so until then I'll be drinking enough Flat whites and eating enough mexican food to keep me going until my next Sydney trip.

OBJECT GALLERY 'WE CRAFT THIS CITY' EXHIBITION

Oooo I am so excited to be in the We Craft This City exhibition! For one week, Object Gallery will become a live workshop and making space occupied by creative individuals and collectives. Produced by Kate Ford, We Craft This City is a celebration of DIY culture, weaving together craft process and social commentary. An intensive making period will mark the beginning of this gallery occupation, and you are invited to contribute to the outcome. Donate materials, learn and share skills, make and be merry.

Here is the little Hello Sandwich Craft Wall blurb:

Ebony Bizys’ ‘Hello Sandwich Craft Wall’ is a display of the various forms of craft Bizys engages in. The craft wall combines gift wrapping, artworks, paper craft, zines, paintings, drawings, Japanese mt washi tape illustrations, found objects, Japanese tanabata paper craft elements and collage.

The objects included in the ‘Hello Sandwich Craft Wall’ have been selected for their crafty and visual appeal. These items aim to showcase the various forms of current art and craft popular now. Many of the items were found in Tokyo where Bizys currently lives. The interesting part is the way in which all of the craft forms and found objects connect and relate to each other once combined in a ‘Craft Wall’ installation. In a way, it is like a visual map of the creative objects that inspire and inform Bizys’ creative world.

Bizys is interested in finding beauty in, a crafty use for, otherwise overlooked everyday objects. The ‘Hello Sandwich Craft Wall’ includes gift wrapping bows constructed out of kitchen cleaning sponges, collage works constructed from cardboard boxes, and various other craft items constructed from found objects. You might also spy a pattered paper chopstick holder sitting along side a drawing of the same chopstick holder.

What's in your handbag?

I've always loved these sorts of 'whats in your handbag' projects! So how could I possibly say no when lovely Libby interviewed me about the contents of my bag over at her blog Pinkshirts and Carwrecks.


My latest hangbag is a multicoloured leather retro piece I picked up for ¥1000 the first week of living in Tokyo. It came from a cute little second hand furniture shop on the Daizawa side of Shimokitazawa.

1. I have a love hate relationship with this little furigana Japanese dictionary! Since recently moving to Tokyo three months ago I’ve been madly trying to dust up on my very average Japanese language skills. I carry this dictionary, as well as a small army of flash cards around with me everyday.

2 . Cute little woven pencil case I bought from Sou in Shimokitazawa a few years ago.

3. It’s impossible to have a neat blunt fringe without regular use of one of these.

4. Japan is THE city of points cards. If I get just one more I think my purse will break open! My favourite is this cute tiffany blue Okadaya fabric shop points card. It looks so cute along with my Pantone 107.3 coloured passmo and my lilac Shinsei bank card! I may, or may not position these three cards in a row just because they look pretty!

5. My oldie but a goodie Tsumori Chisato wallet. I love Tsumori!!!

6. The key to my heart! Ha ha! Well it’s the key to my turquoise mamachari bike which I love riding around Tokyo on!

7. It’s so inspiring in Tokyo. Everyday I see something new and interesting to me. I record things on a daily basis in this little notebook.

8. Atrix handcream - an essential handbag item!

9. I have a bit of a name for myself as being a coral lippie lover! This lipstick was bought for me as a ‘farewell to Tokyo’ present from my dear friend Richard Waller (editor of Inside Out magazine). I couldn’t have picked a better coral for myself! He is truly amazing!

10. LoFT! My favourite place in the world! Stationery, homewares, kitchenware, luggage goods, everything you could want! No trip to Shibuya is complete without popping into LoFT!

11. My cute pink Holga! I love this little camera! She comes all around Tokyo with me!

12. Mintia Japanese mints. Katsu-curry? No problems!

13. Free Tissues! Oooo it makes me so happy when I get handed a packet of free promotional tissues from one of the people manning the station exits. Usually they ignore me as I am a foreigner and they know I can’t read the Japanese advertising on the tissues. But hey – gaijins (foreigners) have noses too you know!

14. Pantone Pastel Colour Formula Guide. I can’t go anywhere without this. Whether I am picking out fabrics in Nippori or selecting coloured paper in Tokyu Hands…life is easier with this formula guide. It was a gift from my lovely VOGUE Living Art Director!

15. Dear iphone4, where would I be without you? I’d be lost, bored and lonely, that’s where! Thank you for making my life in Tokyo so much more enjoyable! Love Love, Hello Sandwich xoxo

16. You're not truly Japanese until you daintily pull out one of these from your Marc Jacobs handbag to pat your cheeks dry every now and then. Extra Japanese bonus points for drying your hands with them after a visit to a LoFT bathroom.

18. My can’t-go-anywhere-without Louis Vuitton keys holder and diary. There is something just so lovely about writing appointments in this diary.
