Christmas Garland Workshop at Shibaura House

I will be hosting a Christmas Garland Workshop at Shibuara House on 15th December from 7pm - 9pm. The workshop is part of the 'Handmade Present for Christmas' project.

ツリーに巻くだけでなく、窓ガラスや壁に飾っても素敵なガーランド（ロープ状の飾り）を作ります。サンドイッチさん手作りのオーナメントはもちろん、ポンポンやレース、生地を使って、ガーリーなガーランドを作りましょう。

Hello Sandwich Christmas Garland Workshop

Let's enjoy making a non-traditional style Christmas Garland in pretty feminine colours!
Participants will receive paper ornaments designed by Hello Sandwich (such as a wreath, a Christmas tree and a striped bauble) to include in their original Christmas Garland. Participants can use pom poms, fabric, lace and trims, tinsel and other materials provided to make their garland. Participants will also be shown how to make the Hello Sandwich confetti bow to include on their garland.

There will also be an exhibition on the ground floor during the Present Exhibition and I'll be doing a colourful window display so please pop in and say hello!

Nengajo Making Workshop at Commune Gallery

Hello Sandwiches!
It's time to start making new years cards!
It's more fun to make them with others in a cute gallery with a nice cold beer don't you think? I hope you can come along to our Nengajo making workshop on 8th December in Shimokitazawa.

Let's make 2012 Nengajo together!
It would be so much fun if you could come and make Nengajo with us at commune gallery. In the workshop we will gather around a table and have fun hand stamping, collaging and using stickers and drawing to decorate our new years cards. You will receive ten copies of the confetti new year card I just designed then you can have fun decorating it in your own unique style. There will also be blank cards for you to decorate if you prefer. It will be fun to make them all together in a festive environment don't you think?

2012年の年賀状を一緒に作りましょう！
gallery communeでのワークショップでは、テーブルを皆で囲んでシールやステッカーでコラージュしたり、スタンプを押したり、イラストを描いたりして年賀状を作ります。
参加者の皆さんには、私がデザインした紙吹雪柄の年賀状を10枚づつお渡しするので、そのカードに皆さん独自の方法でデコレーションをしてオリジナルの年賀状を作ってください。
もちろん、無地のカードもご用意してますので、お好みの方をお選びくださいね。
はなやいだ環境で、一緒に年賀状を楽しく作りませんか？

Hakone 2011

It's that time of year again in Tokyo where people take the Odakyu sen Romance Car and flock to Hakone to view the autumn leaves. We went yesterday and it was just beautiful! The colours of the leaves are just breathtaking!





This year we took the Hakone Ropeway to Ashinoko.









We could clearly see Fuji-san from the ropeway.



Everyone made an 'oooooooooo!!!' when we spotted Fuji san and the sound of all the cameras clicking was so Japan.











It was so tempting to take a ride on the Swan Boats, but do you know the legend? Some say that if you ride on these boats with your boyfriend of girlfriend you will break up.





Lunch time beers and Nabe yaki udon with an incredible view of the lake.







We stopped off Hakone Museum to wonder around the museums gardens. The mix of the fresh air, the cool weather and the beautiful leaves was just lovely.

On the way back down to Hakone we felt heat coming up from our feet. When we glanced down we saw we were standing over a drain with hot onsen water flowing through. Along the road side the hot water trickled down the hill and we stood watching the steam rising. I enjoyed putting my hand in the water to feel its natural heat which is really quite incredible.

If you're in Tokyo during Autumn one day, I recommend a day trip to Hakone. Or better still, stay overnight in a local Ryokan and enjoy an onsen.

Pocket Tissue Case Workshop!

Hello Sandwiches,

These are some incredible pocket tissue cases the participants made at the Hello Sandwich Pocket Tissue Case sewing workshop at Shibaura House last night!




Everyone hard at work at Shibaura House.

I find it so inspiring meeting everyone at the workshops. People who attended last nights workshop included textile students, illustrators, gallery owners, hair+make artists, furniture designers, editors, editorial art directors, stationery shop owners, product designers and many other amazing people. It's always a buzz with conversation (when participants aren't so quiet from too much concentration that is!) between these creatives in both Japanese and English.

Boys come to the Sandwich workshops too! This was Kenji-san's first time hand sewing and he did such an amazing job. How cute is the fluoro green pom pom!　お疲れ様けんじさん！

This cute Tote bag started off at Kanae-san's embroidery workshop!



This is cute Mami with her pocket tissue case...and oh. my. goodness...



...how cute are these cookie-look-alike brooches that Mami-chan made for me!!! I will wear them everyday! What a lovely surprise to receive such a beautiful handmade gift at the end of the workshop!　ありがとうまみーちゃん！

I'll be having 4 more workshops at different locations (and also including one at Shibaura House) before Christmas so I hope you can pop on in to one! Details to follow.

Libro Aoyama Display

Hello Sandwiches!

Do you remember the Japanese book I made with two other authors? Well, we were able to work with Libro bookshop in Aoyama to do a series of workshops and a window display for our book. If you're around, pop on it to see some of the cute boxes and envelopes you can make using the materials and templates from our book!

The Hello Sandwich workshop will be at Libro Aoyama on 29th November from 7pm. There is a small materials cost of ¥500 but that's all! And you can come along and make a book cover, a little house shaped box and time depending, some other cute wrapping things too like corsages etc. There are ten spots so be sure to reserve and collect your little ticket.

Killigraph-san (one of the other authors) will have his workshop on 6th December and he will show you how to make some of the cute cut outs he is so well known for - this time in Christmas theme. Imagine how cute your Christmas cards will look with mini cut out Santas!





Shimizu-san and Killigraph-san and I met a few days ago at our publishers office to get a head start on making up some gift wrapping examples for our display. I kept pinching myself that this is how my meetings look these days! No excel spreadsheets, no planning grids (no offence VL! I still miss you all!), but those things had been replaced with mountains of mt tape, scrap paper, shaped hole punches and, the most necessary item in my 'kit bag' - tape glue!

Our publisher brought us Christmas themed coffee from Tully's. No sooner than he had dropped them off we had cut up the Tully's carry bag to use the handles for our own gift wrapping paper bags! That's the fun thing about our book - you can use everything and anything in conjunction with our materials to create fun and unique wrapping!

When I first moved to Japan I don't think I could imagine that I'd be doing window displays for a book I made that's for sure. It was really an incredible experience and I really hope you like the book! You can buy it on amazon.co.jp - they ship internationally :)

Hello Sandwich 'It's Dots!' Wrapping Paper

Hello Sandwiches!

Can you believe it's almost Christmas! Waou! With this in mind I made some wrapping paper :)

I'm not one for red and green Christmas themes...but instead prefer jazzing up my favourite colours with gold and silver. 'It's Dots!' Wrapping Paper is great not only for Christmas but for any present all year long. You can also cut up this paper to make gift tags! Or even have fun covering a book Japanese style with this 'It's Dots!' paper.
