When I got home from the set up installation today I was stopped on the street by a courier who recognised me and had a delivery from mt tape for me! He quickly pulled over his van and asked me if I was going home, then he followed me with a huge box from mt!

mt asked me to do another mt school for wrapping workshop (remember last years? ) and make five artworks for the mt exhibition! So these beautiful tapes will be put to good use! The first workshop will be on April 7th at 11am! I hope you can come along!

The lovely Isabell Boinot (do you remember this?) is back in town and I am so excited. Sarah and I visited her at her exhibition at Harcoza today. Her exhibition and lovely new book are so lovely, if you have the chance pop on over to Daikanyama to have a look. Harcoza is soooo cute too! I want almost everything in that shop! There was even finger shaped wagashi today for the special opening party!

Osusowake

Photobucket

I am loving 'osusowake' at the moment. It's a word used to describe a small gift given to a friend when you share a little of something you already have. For example when you buy a roll of stickers but share a small section of them with a friend, or if you have too many sweets then you can share some with a friend. In the past I've received an 'osusowake' of some mini packets of 16 grain rice from a friend. I had previously mentioned that I was looking for quinoa in Tokyo and she had found a rice that had included quinoa as one of it's 16 grains. My friend is so sweet that she translated the 'how-to-make' instructions into English and included the packaging should I wish to buy it again when I ran out next. It was such a sweet gesture!

On another occasion, when I went for crafternoon at Kazumi-chans house, I had tried to make a folder similar to the one I had learnt how to make at Kazumi-chans house only to realise I needed the special elastic she had. A day or two later a mini sample pack of every colour of the elastic and some lolly coloured ribbons arrived in a sweets box at my house! They were packaged so sweetly inside cupcake patties. I almost cried it was so sweet. It was another 'osusowake'.

The history of the word 'osusowake' is really lovely. It has it's origins back when hand making kimonos was very popular. The leftover fabric from making the kimono was shared with other friends. From what I can gather:

'Suso' is the bottom hem remnants of fabric
'Wake' is to divide
So it's like the diving and sharing of excess fabric samples.
To me this is so beautiful and poetic.

A friend of mine attended my Fabric Book Cover workshop and mentioned she wanted to make another one so I packed up some fabrics and trims for her to make her next book cover. A Hello Sandwich Osusowake.

Photobucket

The package got a little damaged in my bike basket on the way over to my friends photo studio but Boco-chan didn't seem to mind too much and she set off taking photo of the small gift.

Photobucket

While Boco-chan was photographing her present I set off taking photos of her craft samples. She said she was inspired by my Hello Sandwich Gift Wrapping Book to make these plastic bag pompoms! I loved the fact that these craft samples were on the shelf just next to her studio desk! ha ha - a little bit of work - a little bit of pom pom action - a little bit of work...

These are her cute pompoms.

And I received these lovely 'osusowake' mini chocolates from Boco-chan.

Boco-chan and I had a delicious lunch and then enjoyed a sanpo in Yoyogiuehara.

Fabric Crafternoon

Photobucket

Photobucket

I had a little fabric crafternoon with my friend Yuko-chan today. I made some sandwiches and pulled out my linen napkins. There was a 'crafternoon' mixtape playing. Sunlight. Japanese and English. Sparkling mineral water with lemon. Pink and white marshmallows. Polka dot cutlery. It was nice.

Yuko-chan packed her fabrics like this to bring to my house!

And this is her adorable Mina Perhonen bag.

Cuteness.

Happy Monday Sandwiches.

Hello Sandwich Everyday Craft Life

Photobucket

Hello Sandwiches,

These are the everyday craft life pictures that couldn't fit into the below post!

I was asked to do a Martha Stewart demonstration day and pop up craft booth to launch the Martha Stewart Craft Range which will be stocked exclusively in Tokyo at Entre Square in Aoyama! Exiting no? There have been couriers arriving at my house bringing boxes of Martha Stewart punches! I have to pinch myself to believe if it's true. These are a few of the samples I've been making for the demonstration day.

Photobucket

The demonstration day will be on March 31st at Entre Square. I will be doing four 30 minute demonstrations on the hour 13:00, 14:00, 15:00 and 16:00.

13:00 = Original Wrapping Bag and Corsage making
14:00 = Scrapbooking and bookmark making
15:00 = Original card and tag making
16:00 = Party Decorations - Coaster, Luncheon Sheet, Cup decoration

The demonstrations are free (!) and reservations can be made by emailing (English okay) aoyama@entrex.co.jp

These two adorable cuties and their equally as cute handmade scrapbooks at my last Kusakanmuri workshop. Did you know the girl on the left is amazing illustrator Yuzuko-chan! I told her she was a superstar and that I was so excited that famous illustrator and book author Yuzuko-chan was going to be a participant at my workshop but she very humbly said that she was not famous at all. And the cutie on the right is my new friend Mami-chan who works as a zakka product designer at Gladly Gladee. Do you remember she also handmade me the brooch that looks like a cookie? Click here and scroll to the bottom.

Below is Mamis scrapbook! How cute is she writing Hello Sandwich on her book - and a little fried egg!

And Yuzuko-chan made a little 'Thank you Ebony' sign with my photo in the back of her scrapbook. She said it's to remember the workshop! What an honour.

It's rainy and grey and cold and frosty here today in Tokyo. All I feel like doing is writing letters and decorating envelopes all day and drinking chai. Is that too naughty?

Happy Weekend Sandwiches!
